Work Permits
Since summer is arriving, many students are inquiring about obtaining a work
permit for a summer job. Work permits are required by the Illinois Department
of Labor for 14 and 15 year olds. Once a student has reached the age of 16, a
work permit is no longer required.
What hours
can a minor legally work?
A 14 or
15 year old minor may NOT work:
• before 7 a.m.
• after 7 p.m. between Labor Day and June 1.
• after 9 p.m. June 1 through Labor Day.
• more than 8 hours on non-school days.
• more than 3 hours on school days.
• more than 24 hours during school weeks.
• more than 48 hours during non-school weeks.
• more than six days per week.
There are restrictions on the types of jobs that a minor may perform. A 14
or 15 year old may not work:
• In a bowling alley, billiards room, skating rink, garage, or in conjunction
with any power driven machinery.
• In or about any hazardous factory work.
• In roofing operations or construction work.
• In laundry or dry cleaning.
• At a gas or service station.
• In operations that involve working on an elevated surface.
• In any establishment where alcoholic beverages are served or sold.
To obtain a work permit, contact Angie Young, guidance counselor at (217)795-4822
ext.1113 or via email at ayoung@argenta-oreana.org. Remember that a call will
be made FIRST to verify that the student has been employed before the work
permit can be completed.
Final transcripts
Congratulations to the graduating seniors! Many are preparing for orientations
at colleges this summer. Mrs. Young will be preparing final transcripts and
immunization records to mail to colleges as long as the senior filled out a
senior exit questionnaire directing their transcript to be sent. If there is
a change in where the transcript should be sent, or if the student would like
an additional final transcript to be sent to another school, please contact
Mrs. Young. Final transcripts will be sent AFTER the final posting of grades,
usually the first week in June.
Summer school
Argenta-Oreana HS offers summer school for Driver’s Education only. A
student must have completed a year of high school to be enrolled in summer
driver’s education. The summer driver’s ed program is for students
who are 15 or are turning 15 within two weeks of the class. Eligibility letters
were sent out in May.
For students
wishing to remediate coursework that they failed, the following
area schools are offering summer school courses:
Mt. Zion HS: English, Math, Consumer Education
Warrensburg-Latham HS: English, Science
Meridian High School: English, Math (General Math and Algebra only)
Monticello High School: English
Students
can earn only .5 credit (one semester) during the summer.
Contact those high schools directly for more information about class availability
and registration.
Class schedules
for 2008-2009
Mrs. Young has been working with current high school students to prepare class
schedules for the 2008-2009 school year. The master high school schedule was
designed based on the original course requests that students made in January-February.
Changes to schedules will be made for students who 1) fail a course and need
to retake it; 2) students whose summer coursework makes a schedule change necessary;
3) those who fail a required class for graduation and are no longer eligible
to attend the Decatur Area Technical Academy. The counselor may make changes
to the students’ schedules during the summer in an attempt to balance
class sizes. Students may not change schedules simply to join friends in a
different section of the class, or to take a class at a preferred time of day.
